Kill Away The Gay: 3 Gay South African Teens Allegedly Starved, Tortured, and Killed At Ex-Gay Conversion Camp That Attempted To Make Them Straight [TW: Graphic Violence, Graphic Content, Malnourishment, Torture, Anti-Gay Bigotry, Anti-Gay Discrimination, Homophobia]

Three South African teens have died after they attended a camp meant to make them more conventionally masculine. They were allegedly starved, tortured and beaten by employees who ran the Echo Wild Game Rangers training course in South Africa, the Gay Star News reports.

49-year-old Alex De Koker and his colleague, Michael Erasmus, are on trial on charges of murder, child abuse and neglect. They allegedly targeted the boys because they were perceived as gay and effeminate.

One of the dead boys is Raymond Buys, a 15-year-old. He attended the camp because his mother wanted “to make him a better man, to give him a better future,” she told The Daily Telegraph, a UK newspaper. But Buys was allegedly chained to his bed at night, refused permission to go to the bathroom and was forced to eat his own feces, according to the testimony of someone who attended the camp with Buys. The witness also said Buys was beaten if he failed to carry out a task.

The witness added that De Koker tied “Buys to a chair naked with his head covered in a pillowcase, and would electrocute him with a stun gun,” the Gay Star News reports.

Two other boys also died at the camp four years earlier. One of them, 18-year-old Eric Calitz, tried to leave the camp. De Koker told him that he wasn’t “a moffie [gay] and he would make a man out of him.” Calitz died, and his family was told it was due to a heart attack. But “doctors said the cause of death was from a seizure, dehydration and found bleeding from the brain,” according to the Gay Star News.

De Koker was handed a suspended sentence for the death of Calitz. He and his colleague have pleaded not guilty to the current charges.

A picture of Raymond Buys, 15, taken in April 2011 showed a skeletal, emaciated figure fighting for his life.

Just 10 weeks before, the teen’s parents signed him up to the Echo Wild Game Rangers training course in South Africa in perfect health.

In hospital, Buys was severely malnourished, dehydrated, his arm was broken in two places and there were burns and wounds all over his body. He lay in intensive care for four weeks until he died.

And now, the course ‘general’ Alex De Koker, 49, and employee Michael Erasmus, 20, are on trial for charges of murder, child abuse and neglect, along with two cases of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm in relation to Buys’ death.

The teen’s death is alleged to have been the third among the Afrikaans children who attended the R22,000 ($2,400, €1,900) courses, which have been advertized since 2006.

‘I sent my son on this course to make him a better man, to give him a better future,’ Buys’ mother told The Daily Telegraph. ‘I trusted Alex De Koker with his life.’

Last week, the Vereeniging District Court heard the testimony of a boy who had shared a tent with Buys, the Daily Maverick reports.

Gerhard Oostuizen, 19, claims Buys was chained to his bed every night, was refused permission to visit the toilet and on one occasion was forced to eat his own faeces.

He also said he would be beaten with planks, hosepipes and sticks when he failed to carry out manual labor tasks.

Oostuizen alleged further he saw De Koker tied Buys to a chair naked with his head covered in a pillowcase, and would electrocute him with a stun gun.

Gender activist Melanie Nathan has said the three young men were all perceived as ‘gay and clearly effeminate’.

In reference to ‘gay conversion camps’, Nathan writes: ‘With a little bit of digging [into the story], the gay reparative undertones start to emerge.’

Eric Calitz, 18, and Nicolaas Van Der Walt, 19, had both died after being enrolled at the Echo Wild Game Rangers camp four years earlier.

When Calitz requested to leave, De Koker reportedly told him he ‘wasn’t a moffie [gay] and he would make a man out of him’.

Calitz’s family was informed of his death via text message, saying he had died of a heart attack.

Afterwards, doctors said the cause of death was from a seizure, dehydration and found bleeding from the brain.

Van Der Walt was also claimed to have died from a heart attack, but doctors said he had appeared to have been choked with a seatbelt.

In 2009, De Koker was handed a suspended sentence over Calitz but escaped charges for the death of Van Der Walt, and the camp was allowed to continue.

Both De Koker and Erasmus have pleaded not guilty to the charges. The case continues.

Bulletproof backpacks, ballistic safety vests and ballistic shields disguised as whiteboards are cropping up in schools around the country.

Welcome to post-Newtown America: where gun control legislation can’t be passed but companies are profiting by selling bulletproof backpacks for children in schools. The backpacks, along with ballistic safety vests and ballistic shields disguised as whiteboards in classrooms, are among the products companies are pushing in the aftermath of the Newtown massacre.

The Guardian reports that a Denver-based company, Elite Sterling Security, has sold 300 bulletproof backpacks over the last two months. The company has also received inquiries about their backpacks from 2,000 families across the U.S. And the company is in talks with schools in Colorado about “equipping them with ballistic safety vests, a scaled-down version of military uniforms designed to hang in classroom cupboards for children to wear in an emergency,” The Guardian reports.

“If you put it on her back, it almost covers her whole body,” one Colorado parent whose child wears a bulletproof backpack explained to the British newspaper. “It was a very hard conversation to have but she knows that it’s something that will keep her safe.”

There are also ballistic shields that look like whiteboards in classrooms. Schools in North Dakota, Pennsylvania and California have bought them.

Scott Staska, a superintendent of schools in Minnesota, said the ballistic shields are important for safety. “We have door locks, safety cameras, and emergency procedures all designed to assist with an emergency situation and we see the marker boards as one additional tool to help in the process,” he said.

So while these places may not be taking the National Rifle Association up on its suggestion to put armed guards in schools, they’re coming very close to it. In post-Newtown America, schools are becoming places where seeing bulletproof vests, backpacks and shields is normal. But as Think Progress notes, psychiatrists have warned ”that militarizing schools could cause long-term harm to children.”
